SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework
The SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework was developed by UN-Water. In early 2020, HLCP welcomed the Framework and expressed support for its further development and implementation through UN-Water. It was subsequently noted by the CEB in May 2020 and launched at a side event in the margins of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development in July 2020, which included the participation of the UN Secretary-General and Executive Heads of UN system entities.
The SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework is a new, unifying initiative that aims to deliver fast results at an increased scale. It is part of the UN Secretary-General’s Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs by 2030.
The SDG 6 Synthesis Report on Water and Sanitation 2023 prepared by UN-Water for the UN 2023 Water Conference recommended that the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework be elevated and transformed into a UN system-wide strategy for water and sanitation.
Subsequently in September 2023, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to “present a United Nations system-wide water and sanitation strategy in consultation with Member States before the end of the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly, in order to enhance the coordination and delivery of water priorities across the United Nations system ...” (A/RES/77/334).
In response UN-Water developed a draft system-wide strategy on water and sanitation through an extensive consultative process and approved the draft strategy in February 2024. Subsequently, HLCP members were invited to review the draft strategy and provide inputs.
The United Nations system-wide strategy for water and sanitation (CEB/2024/1/Add.2) was approved by HLCP in March 2024 and endorsed by CEB in May 2024.
