UN-Water

UN-Water was established by the Chief Executives Board in 2003 as the United Nations inter-agency coordination mechanism to maximize system-wide coordinated action and coherence on all freshwater-related issues, including sanitation. UN-Water brings together 35 members from the UN system and 44 international partners. UN-Water works along three lines:

  • Informing policy processes and emerging issues;
  • Supporting monitoring and reporting on water and sanitation;
  • Building knowledge and inspiring action.

It reports annually to the Board through the High Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP).

UN-Water is a strategic asset of the UN system to respond with a “whole of UN system” approach to the water-related challenges of the 2030 Agenda and of the Paris Agreement, advancing the implementation of  UN Reform at the country level and linking the development and the peace and security communities.
