CEB: Coordinating follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society 23.02.2017

The concluding phase of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-led World Summit on the Information Society took place in Tunis in November 2005. A main objective of the process was to chart future directions in areas critical to bridging the digital divide. The outcomes of the Tunis phase, along with the earlier phase in Geneva in 2003, present a vision of an inclusive information society, which would harness information and ICTs to empower individuals, communities and nations to achieve their full potential.

CEB: Box 5.1 Working together on the information society 23.02.2017

CEB member organizations collaborated closely in the ITU-led preparatory and follow-up processes for the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Geneva on 10-12 December 2003. Their contributions were coordinated through the High-Level Summit Organizing Committee (HLSOC) led by ITU. At the second phase of the Summit in Tunis, the HLSOC is expected to monitor implementation of the Geneva Action Plan by organizations of the UN system and report on those efforts to the Summit process.

Since its inception by the World Bank in 2003, the Web4Dev community of practice has brought together members of central web teams from UN system organizations, international development agencies and international development NGOs.

CEB: United Nations Geographic Information Working Group (UNGIWG) 23.02.2017

UNGIWG was formed in 2000 to address common geospatial issues - maps, boundaries, data exchange, standards - that affect the work of UN Organizations and Member States. UNGIWG also works directly with non-governmental organizations, research institutions and industry to develop and maintain common geographic databases and geospatial technologies to enhance normative and operational capabilities. UNGIWG reports periodically to the UN Chief Executive Board (CEB) on progress made and priority issues.
