United Nations System Common Messages for COP29 and COP30

In August 2024, the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination endorsed the UN System Common Messages for COP29 and COP30, developed through the High-level Committee on Programmes (HLCP), which approved the Messages at an intersessional meeting in July 2024.

The Common Messages were produced by the HLCP Climate Working Group for COP29 and COP30, co-led by UNFCCC and the Secretary-General’s Climate Action Team, in response to the request by the Secretary-General and CEB for a coherent and strategic contribution to strengthen the system’s coordination for COP29 and COP30.

The set of common messages builds on the Board’s longstanding efforts to address climate change and provides an internal guide to inform UN system advocacy and outreach. The Common Messages outline seven key areas for action: ensuring that the 1.5°C-goal of the Paris Agreement remains the focus of all efforts; aligning the new NDCs with the 1.5°C-goal; ensuring fast and fair 1.5°C-aligned transitions; accelerating climate finance flows; stepping up climate adaptation; fully operationalizing the Fund for Loss and Damage; and aligning non-state actors’ commitments and actions with limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
