In response to General Assembly resolution 62/208 on the triennial comprehensive policy review, the High-level Committee on Programmes endorsed a proposal to amend and expand the terms of reference of the United Nations Group on the Information Society, with a view to giving science and technology more prominence. The Group had originally been established as an inter-agency mechanism for coordinating substantive and policy issues related to the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society. The Group was requested to provide the High-level Committee on Programmes with a report containing recommendations on how the United Nations system could strengthen its role in facilitating access by developing countries to new and emerging technologies, as well as assist in mainstreaming science and technology, including information and communications technologies, in national development or poverty reduction strategies, in accordance with the priorities of countries.
