The Post-2015 UN Development Agenda

At the September 2010 MDG Summit, UN Member States initiated steps towards advancing the development agenda beyond 2015 and led a process of extensive consultations on the post-2015 agenda.

The UN worked with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum generated by the MDGs and carry on with an ambitious post-2015 development agenda.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon established a UN System Task Team to coordinate preparations for beyond 2015. In July 2012, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the establishment of a High-level Panel of Eminent Persons to advise on the global development framework beyond 2015. The work of the Panel reflected new development challenges while also drawing on experience gained from the MDGs. The Panel delivered its report to the Secretary-General in May 2013.

To support the Secretary-General in the preparations towards a post-2015 development framework, the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), currently the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG), conducted broad consultation processes. Those consultations included national dialogues on the post- 2015 development agenda in more than 50 developing countries, eleven multi-stakeholder thematic consultations on a wide range of issues, and an outreach process to citizens and stakeholders in all countries, utilizing social media.

The High-level Committee on Programme (HLCP) took up the issue of the post-2015 development agenda at its second session in 2012. At the session, the Committee reflected on the challenge to foster coherence and coordination among the various processes and the need for convergence and integration of the various dimensions of development.
